Gathering of ASEAN and Russian Scientists to Share their Experiences in the Development of Vaccines (uploaded on 4 December 2008)

Scientists from ASEAN and Russia gathered in Moscow in a Workshop on Development and Creation of Vaccines of New Generation: “problems of security of the regional and local requirements” held on 27-28 November 2008. They shared their scientific experiences in the development of vaccines to combat various human and animal diseases. ASEAN scientists presented the progress of the regional on-going efforts to develop H5N1 vaccines, and national activities in the development of vaccine to combat poultry diseases, and other efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in vaccine procurement and supply. Russia scientists share their research experiences, among others, in the development of new generation of vaccines, development of monoclonal antibodies, creation of safety vaccines, production of recombinant proteins in plants using viral vectors.

The Workshop participants recognised the obvious necessity in vaccines self-sufficiency of both individual countries and the region as a whole and the necessity of international cooperation in the region in the sphere of development and creation of vaccines of new generation, including legal support and insurance for participants of tests, and necessity of speeding up cooperation between participants of the Workshop as well as other possible partners in the sphere and on the problems of mutual interest. ASEAN scientists expressed their interest to learn more about the various technologies established in Russian laboratories in reverse genetics, monoclonal antibody technology, adjuvant immunstimulator synthesis, as well as vaccine nanotechnology, plant virus-based expression vector for recombinant viruses, mono- and multivalent recombinant vaccine.

ASEAN suggested that the follow up activities under ASEAN-Russia collaboration in biotechnology could be focused on seminars, workshop, training and bi/or multilateral collaborative R&D projects on emerging infectious diseases (EIDs), especially on antibody technology for diagnostics and therapeutics.

The ASEAN and Russian delegations at the Workshop were led by Dr. Le Tran Binh, Chair of Biotechnology Council, Viet Nam Academy of Science and Technology cum Chairperson of the ASEAN Sub - Committee on Biotechnology, and Dr. E. Severin, Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of Russian Research Center of Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy.(DT)
