The ASEAN and Russian scientists and experts in the area of renewable energy shared information and experiences at the ASEAN-Russia Workshop on Renewable Energy for Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Viet Nam (CLMV) held in Vientiane on 22-23 December 2008. Although the Workshop aimed to increase the capacities of the CLMV countries, the other ASEAN countries also participated. ASEAN and Russia presented the status of renewable energy research and development in their respective countries. Russia also presented some of the technologies to generate electricity and in the production of biofuels.

As a follow up to the Workshop, ASEAN and Russia agreed to undertake various activities such as seminar and exchange of visits of experts. Joint scientific research works will also be explored.

The Opening Ceremony of the Workshop was officiated by Dr. Maydom Chantanasinh, Vice President of the National Authority of Science and Technology (NAST) of Lao PDR, Mr. Alexander Artomonov, Counsellor of the Russian Embassy in Lao PDR and Mr. Nikolay V. Sviridov, Deputy Chief of Ecology and Renewable Energy of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation.
