India and ASEAN Held Joint Technology Summit and Technology Platform (TSTP) 2006

Untitled Document H.E. Kapil Sibal, the Minister of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences of India officiated the Opening Ceremony of the India-ASEAN Technology Summit and Technology Platform (TSTP) 2006 on 6 November 2006. The event, held for two days on 6-7 November 2006, aimed to provide an opportunity for R&D institutions, academia, industries and government of ASEAN countries and India to interface. Through this interfacing, it was expected that the technology partnerships between ASEAN and India will be facilitated.

Held at Intercontinental Hotel, New Delhi, activities of the Summit comprised technical conferences, exhibition and also meetings among S&T Ministers and Officials from ASEAN and India. The Republic of Korea also participated in the event as a special guest.

Around 70 speakers representing R&D organizations, universities and industries from ASEAN countries and India presented the outcomes of their research work and state-of-the art of technologies in the areas of food science and marine technology, space technology, materials science and welding technology, ICT and biotechnology. Around 500 people attended the five technical sessions.

At the exhibition, there were 9 booths from ASEAN, 1 booth from ROK and 11 booths from India showcasing scientific posters and technology products. Around 2000 people were estimated to have visited the exhibition.

As the event was also attended by S&T Ministers and Senior Officials, a Ministerial Conclave was convened during the TSTP. Co-chaired by H.E. Kapil Sibal and H.E. Dr. Jamaluddin Mohd. Jarjis, Minister for Science & Technology and Innovation (MOST), Malaysia, ASEAN and India came up with several new initiatives to further strengthen the S&T cooperation as stated in the Co-Chairmen’s Statement
. These include the creation of a common India-ASEAN S&T Development Fund to support joint R&D activities in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and advanced materials.

ASEAN and India would also embark on joint undertakings to harmonize standards of a regulatory framework in relation to biotechnology products, and consider the establishment of an India-ASEAN institute for Intellectual Property for building human resource capacities and training to serve the ASEAN region. ASEAN and India would also encourage linkages between academic institutions, research laboratories, professional bodies and industry to create a knowledge grid and to support the mobility of members of the scientific community.

ASEAN and India are also very keen to hold technology summits on a regular basis utilising existing platforms in India and ASEAN for encouraging competitiveness within a cooperative framework amongst all stake holders.
