The 2nd Meeting of the East Asia Bioinformatics Network, 13-14 June 2007, Phatum Thani, Thailand. (uploaded on 26 June 2007)

Bioinformatics specialists from ASEAN and the East Asian Countries gathered at the 2nd Meeting of the East Asia Bioinformatics Network (EABN) held on 13-14 June 2007 at the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), Thailand Science Park, Pathum Thani, Thailand. The Meeting, implemented by the Sub-Committee on Biotechnology (SCB), was organised and supported by the Korea Bioinformatics Center (KOBIC) and BIOTEC. An observer from Pakistan was also present.

Participating countries provided updates on the status of the national bioinformatics developments and various bioinformatics initiatives. Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand shared various programmes in promoting bioinformatics to students through undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in universities using the state-of-the-art of technologies.

Arising from the agreement discussed at the First Meeting, KOBIC organised a competition for ASEAN and the East Asian Countries to develop biowiki, an openfree hypertext program for promoting bioinformatics activities and status in each country. The winner of the first phase of the competition was Indonesia.

During the discussion, the Meeting agreed, among others, on the following:
(i) To organize a short bioinformatics training course during 2008-2009 in Indonesia targeting bioinformaticians from CLMV.;
(ii) Teaching materials and course contents developed by each country should be made available and shareable to other countries so that they can improve the quality of the courses offered to students. The Meeting also encouraged all countries to spend more time in using such resources available from websites to benefit studies, teaching, research, and commercial purposes; and
(iii) KOBIC agreed to continue to lead in the campaign to provide access to various stakeholders to bioinformation. In this regard, KOBIC will continue to lead in the implementation of Biowiki Project in Asia promoting public to search for data, use them, and quickly disseminate information with no cost anytime and anywhere.

Malaysia expressed its interest to organize the third Meeting of the EABN. The details on this matter will be discussed at the future SCB Meeting. (DT)
