Participated by 23 participants from ASEAN Member Countries, China and Tibet, the ASEAN – China Training Course on Application of Satellite Remote Sensing and Satellite Communication Technologies in Disaster Reduction was held in Beijing, China, on 2-15 December 2007. The Training Course, implemented by the Sub-Committee on Space Technology and Applications (SCOSA), was organized by the Secretariat of Asia-Pacific Multilateral Cooperation in Space Technology Applications (AP-MCSTA) in collaboration with Academy of Opto-Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences with the financial support by the ASEAN-China Cooperation Fund (ACCF).

The 10-day Training Course comprised courseworks led by 22 instructors and a number of field visits, was aimed at promoting the use of space technology applications to cope with disasters in the areas of early warning rescue, evaluation and reduction.

The field visits were made to the China Meteorological Administration, National Satellite Meteorological Center, China Remote Sensing Satellite Ground Station, and Application Center of Academy of Opto-Electronics.

Around 20 country reports from 11 countries were presented. The reports highlighted the status of the space technology and applications and development plans.

The Training Course also provided an opportunity for the participants to build a new network of professionals involving in the application of satellite remote sensing and its communication technology.
