SEACOOP Seminar, Brussels, 1 April 2008 (uploaded on 10 April 2008) A joint project between Europe and South East Asia entitled Further Developing Strategic R&D cooperation with South East Asia on ICT (SEACOOP) is currently being implemented with support from the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Commission (EC). To review the progress of the project and also discuss the implementation strategy, a Seminar was held on 1 April 2008 in Brussels. The Seminar was participated by representatives of R&D organisations from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam, the EC and ASEAN Secretariat officials. The participants reviewed the progress of the project. These included several exercises of top-down and bottom-up approaches on, among others, the followings: In response to the Open Consultation on potential cooperation project strategies and mutual interest between Europe and Southeast Asia on ICT research, 52 project proposals from European and Southeast Asian R&D organisations have been received. It is anticipated that more proposals will be received in the near future. Around 10-15 strategic cooperation proposals will be selected when the 4th call for proposals under the FP7 are to be officially announced. To raise the awareness of scientists and officials on cooperation opportunities under EU FP7 Research Funding Programme on ICT, Workshops will be held in Hanoi (17 April 2008), Phnom Penh (24 April 2008) and Vientianne (22 May 2008). Another big event, The 2008 Euro-Southeast Asia Cooperation Forum on ICT Research, will be held in Brussels on 6-7 October 2008. The Forum is expected to be participated by European and Southeast Asian R&D organisations and ICT companies. The SEACOOP project is currently being participated by R&D organisations from eight ASEAN countries. As Brunei Darussalam and Myanmar have joined the project, the ASEAN Secretariat will continue communicating with the National COST Secretariats from Brunei Darussalam and Myanmar to identify and nominate appropriate R&D organisation to participate in the project. Prior to the holding of the Brussels Seminar, the ASEAN Secretariat has already received an interest from COST-Myanmar to participate in the project.
